What's up with Disney's new Trading Card Game - Lorcana?
At D23 last month, Disney announced and released a sample of its newest addition to its empire - a Trading Card Game called Lorcana. The seven cards (one Mickey and six others in a D23 set) being handed out went quickly and are already listed on eBay from several hundred to several thousand dollars. From what we can tell, the game has sourced terms and functionality from existing games including Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering (MTG), Final Fantasy TCG, and more.
Without playing the game or seeing more of what it offers, it appears certain that Lorcana won’t be challenging the incumbent games for market share. As a collectible, however, Lorcana will be all but sure to succeed as Disney has a die-hard following in the millions that are ready to buy anything with its characters emblazoned on it. This adds to the worry of demand being so high that obtaining products to play with will be expensive and difficult to obtain.
It is interesting to speculate how this will affect the future of other cross-IP games like Magic: The Gathering. For anyone hoping to get a Star Wars-themed MTG set or a Marvel / Pokémon cross-over, you should dash those hopes- it probably isn't going to happen.
